Farewell Post

Dear Examiner,
here is my AS level media coursework blog. Over the past year I have learnt a lot making this and I think my work has improved thouroughly. I looked at many different sites on the internet to give me inspiration to produce my magazine. I hope you enjoy looking through my blog as much as I did updating it throughout the progress of making the magazine, and can see how much my skills have improved from the preliminary task to the final product of the front page, contents, double page spread of the magazine and can see how much I have learnt. The links and labels are all at the bottom of the page.
Thankyou,
Jodie-Ann King.

evaluation question 5.

evaluation question 4.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
Media 1

evaluation question 3.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think many different music distributors will want too publish my magazine idea. Levelprint Ltd worked and distributes i-D which is an online magazine however it does have many different forms my magazine has also, for example the audience category, some of the music genres, the colour schemes and the style also. Or ABC they distribute many different magazines, from music too men’s health. I would like my magazine to be distributed by one of these as both of them have magazines with the similar ideas to my magazine, and it's not just about music but also the fashion in music, as what the artist is wearing has a very big impact on their performance. Also there magazines are not just aimed at one particular audience like male or female but both and all categories so they have a wide mind of knowledge. Although my magazine is going to cost £2.30 and the magazine i-D is £5.00 there is kinda  difference, however I think if it was sold in a music store it would really help boost the profits. I think the reason my institution would like my magazine is because it's different, in many ways the same, however some of the features are not near simular. My magazine targets and focuse's on quite a small group in the industry therefore the magazine will be know what to target on each issue, however the stories involved in the magazine will be inspiring to music, and that's what so different about my magazine, although simular situations in other magazines may occur with those types of stories, this is in the music industry.

evaluation question 2.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups ?
The social groups my magazine aims at is more middle class, young adults who are inspired by music, I think it aims at both white and black males and females, I wanted my magazine too have both a male and female audience, however when looking at my magazine it could look quite feminine because of the colours and the image of the girl, however it does say special edition which could make the males realise the next issue could be more about males. The image on the right was taken off the internet however I think it represents my magazine, I wanted it to have style, I think my magazine audience have style, for example an 18 year old female, who takes pride in what they wear, be creative with their looks,  however they got their style based on a musician, with my magazine I think it could be based on styling other people, with other people's images, not as such with models they copy their weight because it looks good or to fit in with the crowd, more so to stand out from the crowd, too teach people not to care what people think, and to follow your dreams, so the social group I would aim for is definitely the inspired audience in the music industry, who are trying to make it, that's why I didn't want my audience to be to young.
The age group i aimed for was 16-20's most likely to be students/musicians in college or university. I didn't want to make it too big or too small audience because it would of been harder to aim for, for example if I did a larger group it would be hard to get the right genre and to use the right language and if I used a smaller audience I wouldn't of got a very big audience. When looking at the magazine you can see that it is about music, therefore it would interest an audience with a musical background however it does also have fashion involved which could make a wider audience. The audience who would buy the magazine would probably be at college or university as I think it's too mature for a younger audience at school and not old enough for an older audience. I think the magazine would be good to be able to be brought in a music shop for example HMV, this is different because not many magazines are sold in them and I think they would get a better audience as it's a music magazine, because the audience who would buy this magazine are more likely to go into a music shop than go into a shop like WHS.

This image represents how I was saying my social group is more so the ones that don't care, the one's who are just looking for a good time, in my magazine it can inspire people to reach their dreams.

I found this video while searching on Youtube.com about music&fashion, I liked this trailer as it shows the girls having a good time and that makes everyone else have a good time, the girls dancing remind me of the girl model on the cover of my magazine and how the photoshoot was, I think it links to my social groups well as they are about the same age, and look like they don't care.

evaluation question 1.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music magazines)

The title of my magazine falls in with the convention as it's one word, also the fact that it is in capital and because of where it is placed, at the top of the page. One of  the reason's I did this was because most of the magazines I looked at were in the same position, and i think it stands out a lot more as if it was at the bottom or down the side it could be quite hard to read. On the front page the layout is quite similar to other magazines I looked at, firstly the image on my front page was the largest object and then had writing around it which quite a lot of magazines do, many magazines either have just one image of either one person or a group of people, other than the title the image is the biggest object as it the most important because people can see what the magazine is about normally just from looking at an image for example my image was a girl, wearing quite a bright 'trashy' top with headphones on so is most likely going to be a music magazine from first impressions. The genre of the magazine is again shown by the image, also the title links into music, and the genres of music is written under the title so the readers will know what genre it is, I saw this on quite a lot of other magazines, however not the genre of music, I liked the writing underneath the title and thought the genre would fit in well. On each page of my magazine, especially the first and second they are linked to music, also their is a blue theme throughout the magazine, this doesn't have any effect on the genre however I did it on each page so it didn't look messy throughout if I used different colours, in many different magazines there are coloured themes throughout them, however they are normally a white background, because I only did three pages of my magazine I used a blue as I thought it fitted in with my font colour theme. My artist is represented by how she is dressed and the pose, she's looking up into the 'sky' which could mean she is looking into her dreams she also looks quite confident therefore you can tell the artist is not afraid, I dressed her in a simple t-shirt, jacket and trousers, the t-shirt was quite dull so I changed the colour and made it brighter. I took over 100 images of my model, with many different poses and camerawork used, I tried different backgrounds, inside and out, and took photo's from above (standing on a bed), from lying down and pointing the camera up and then from waist and eye height. I did many long shops however the image i chose for my final front cover image was from the waist up, I did this so the t-shirt was involved in the image as that stood out and it linked with music, I changed the colours on the t-shirt of the photo however did not edit the photo except for cutting it out with marquee tool. All of my images were close ups, I did this because I think it gives more detail within the image and you feel closer as you can see the facial body language. The image below shows how my magazine has the same forms and conventions of real media products.

Draft Evaluation.

Name; Jodie
Title; Rewind.

Comments;

Cover-title is good, font is very retro (maybe too so) Image works well. Layout needs attention. More thought to placement of cover lines - text is very thin.

Double-Page Spread- Doesn't work.Top right image is great - others are very weak. Too many columns - you only need four on the left page.

Contents-The guy in the street style photo looks homeless- not what you want! Magazine stops at page 12  spread out pages over a full magazine 60-80 pages. Headings are messy - need work. Page no's to be added. Too many contrasting images on right page. Add imafes to R+P Posts that lack them.

R&P level; high 3.
Practical Draft Level; Top 2/Low 3.

The comments I have been given have made me look at my magazine in a different view, a more professional one. I can see how the layout looks messy and out of place as it was very rushed I will make this much more neat and tidy, i'll do this by changing the titles around and using less photo's, I have already done on this double page spread, I have done this by using one photo, I edited the photo so it looks bigger. On the front page I am going to keep the title however change the font, I am going to be using a block black as this looks more professional and stands out more, although I did want to go for an all colour theme it still looks very efficient, I am also going to keep the front page photo.

I took these photo's of a casette because I saw them on google and thought it would be a really good for my magazine contents page. Howeve when cutting the photo I found it quite difficult. I then changed it on the affects to a graffiti looking image, I think this fits in really well with my theme and looks a lot better than my original idea of two pictures on the contents page.

mock article.

Ever wanted to do something but didn't dare? Too scared to speak out? Thought people would laugh? NY speaks to us and tells us how her life a few years ago didn't matter to her, those questions were the outline of her life. Now an upcoming star has arose and isn't backing down until she gets her place in the charts.

" I was 13 when i first got into music, hearing it on the radio really inspired, I knew that's what I wanted to do, however I couldn't my parent's were both in the medical practice and they wanted me too, they were keen to get me into the best university's. I did enjoy it however looking back I think now it's maybe because of how i was brought up, I never was offered anything else, I didn't have hobbies, watch television or listen to music, except for the first time, I still remember it like it was yesterday, it was Dizzee Rascall 'I Luv U' I was at a friends birthday party and I just felt the music flood inside of me." So, you haven't always liked music then? " No, I suppose I would of if my parents had let me, obviously I knew what music was and had heard it, just it was never something big in the family, silence and work were the only options really." How was your opinions to life? " They had always been good, I had perfect grades and a stable house however I lacked confidence, I didn't have many friends, and I had a small family so I had no one to talk too, when I was in year 7 I moved to Leicester, which meant moving school and it didn't go very well, my attitude to learning went downhill, I didn't care, I felt lost, I didn't know who I was, this was till around year 12, I went to college to do art, it broke my parent's hearts, they obviously wanted me to be a Nurse however I didn't want it, I desperately wanted to get into the music I just didn't know how too, I know it's only music but it made me depressed, I knew what I wanted and was capable of doing it just I didn't know how too, I didn't dare speak out to my college let alone my parent's, I didn't care about life, whether I was on the streets or in a house, I was a broken joke.'' When did your life turn around and you become 'NY'? " Doing art at college changed me, I felt i could express myself in the colours just like I could with music, music is art. I was 16 and there was a trip to New York for gifted and talented students, I was destroyed, it had always been my dream to go there, i meerly passed my GCSE's and had only just scraped a place in college, so there was no way I was getting on the trip, however after my first assestment, my teachers saw how good my work was, and knew I was going to get top grades and knew they couldn't afford me to miss an opputunity like this, they even funded me. New York was a real eye opener, although it was an art trip I couldn't let my dream go, music. I had so much passion for it, it was my life. Over there I met a girl a few years older than me, her name was 'Kiz', she found me. It was the last night of the trip we were back in the hotel and there was a talent contest on, I didn't even think about singing in front of people however I thought this could be my chance, just to perform could make me feel alive again, I did, and I had my friends cheering along, it felt like I had just performed to the world, I felt magic. Kiz was a waitress at the hotel, I didn't even see her the whole time I was there however that night after my song she came up to me and we got speaking, she said she had seen me perform and who I was working for, i was mesmorized, I thought she had got the wrong person, 'why is she speaking to me?' we sat there talking all night and she gave me her number and told me to call her when I was back in the UK, I did as soon as i landed, and I have never looked back on that day, she was a recording artist who was already signed, she had a record label and she got me involved with her managers, they contacted me and flew me out to NY basically as soon as I got back, by this time I had moved out into a flat with a few friends and had no contact with my parents, they disowned me because of the music and I also dropped out of college, I did love it however it wasn't what I wanted to do. I got recording a few songs, I'd been recognised, noticed, me? It was all going so fast and I didn't know if I should laugh or cry of happiness. I flew back to the UK on my 17th birthday, as soon as I got 'home' I knew I didn't belong here, New York was my home, it's where I belonged. It made me. So is this why your name is NY? ''Partly yes, however the main reason was my name being Natasha Yates, my initials are NY which could seem as fate I suppose?

To be continued.

pitch feeback.

Taking other students opinions into account I have learnt that there is a huge gap in the magazine industry for my music genre magazine, with the majority saying they like the name and idea. From feedback on my mock-ups by both students and teachers it has been very positive, my idea of making it stand out has worked. Although one student said they disliked the name as it was 'copied' it did make me think, however I did not copy and spell it differently, I thought of it and then found it afterwards, I was intentionally going to change it however I thought it worked really well and couldn't find a better matched title for the magazine. The bright colours was a good idea also which I was quite held back on, I thought it could of been too messy, a bit all over the place and childish however many people like that and how it stands out. The feedback has really helped and inspired me to know what to do on my real magazine as I now have more of an understanding of what the audience like.

inspiration.

From the first image I saw of Iain Crawfords, I knew I wanted to use him as my inspiration for my images, although his pictures have obviously took a lot of time and years of practice which I havent't got. His images are very bright and creative and many different colours are used. Some of them are quite mad and crazy personally too much, almost as if he had ran out of ideas of what to do he just threw something together which I don't really like (the swimming hat images) although my top rated are definetly the paint threw images, these are most of the images. If i had the time and equipment i would definetly do the paint effect image as I think it really stands out, different and would get peoples attention.

colour pallet.

I made this colour pallet with not a very wide variety of colours, these colours will run through out my magazine, however I may not use all of them, I think the font's will be black and the colours will relate to the images. The colours are quite unisex however mostly masculine.

audience profile.

The target audience I am going for are male & female ages around 15 to about 22, the main reason for this is because I don't want it too be limited, if it was just a female magazine not as many people would buy it and it wouldn't appeal to everyone. However as my magazine cover is a special edition on just a female people could get the idea it's just for males however I don't want this to happen, so will try and put in some masculine subjects. Because the genre of music is quite a range I think this will be very appealing to people, as I'm trying to make it quite new however 'old skool' also so many people may read it because of the differences. Also the fact I am using fashion in the magazine gives it more of a variety and a bigger set audience.

Opinion on the blog/magazine/photgraphs;
'I really like the ideas of the article 'Two Lives' because it shows Jodie has put a lot of thought into it, and it's definetly something I would buy to read. I like the colours what she has used for the title and how it links into the pictures. I don't really like the theme of the music because I don't really listen to that, however the magazine(ideas) look very interesting so this is one reason it interests me.'

Opinion on the blog/magazine/photgraphs;
'I think the photo's are very creative, of what i have seen. I think the blog is very eye catching, nice bright colours which is nice to look at it, it links very well with the theme of the magazine. I don't really like the genre of music as I don't really listen to that sort, however the magazine still does interest me.'

rough idea- article.

The title of my article is going to be called 'Two Lifes' the reason for this being is because the artist I have made up is just an 18 year old, college girl unknown to the music industry however has just been noticed and is now hopefully now an upcoming music artist. So I done an interview on both of her lives, one being the normal and the other music. Her name in real life is Natasha Yates and her music name is NY, this is described in the article on why she chose the 'NY' which is not just her initials, but actually means something. One part of the page being NY and the other Natasha Yates, these being seperated by a zig zag 'tear' and being 'taped' up by pictures of both the 'people' however not too parted as I don't want to seperate them too much, then with an interview.

double page spreads.

I really like this double-page spread especially because of one of the pages being completely of an image. I also really like the colours, I think red black and white really work well with each other and contrast very well. It's quite plain however still works and stands out. Personally from looking at the image and the pose of the model I think the audience would be of an younger age rather than the older generation, more teenagers would read it. My idea doesn't include just one picture on a page as I wan't more writing and more than one picture however this is definitely one of my favourites.

I don't really like the colours on this double-page as I think they are pretty plain however it does work well with the layout, just with my magazine I wan't it to be very different to this, I wan't mine to be very colourful. I also really like how the font, in the middle of the page turned from black with a white background to a white with a black background,I think it looks really good and artistic even though it is just the simple colours and I think I may even use this in my magazine.

I don't really like the article font as it looks too plain and a lot like a news paper however the masthead is veyr interseting and caught my attention, I think this happened with a lot of people also as I know many people have used it. I quite like how there is just three colours used however I think they are a bit too dull. I also really like how the larger writing is a quote from the model and that's what I want to do with my double page however smaller as I want the title too stand out a lot more than the quote or quotes.

test shots.

I did these test shots around school, with a fujifilm finepix S1700 camera. The photos are of my friends and family as the model was not available at the time, and i needed to get use to the camera. I told the models to do the poses and where to stand and i used different locations to get an idea of what i wanted.

magazine mockups.

Front Cover; Although this is just a simple title and image design I think it is already quite effective as the colours stand out and grab your attention, that is what I wan't my real magazine design to do. I also really like the pose the model is doing here, and will take into account when I am taking photos of my model.

Front-Cover'second edit; Although my mock up is quite plain, I wan't my magazine cover to be more busy, so it stands out more, not too much as it becomes messy but enough to catch the buyers attention. The barcode and price will be essential on my magazine to make it look professional and realistic, as will the masthead. I more than likely will put in a plug, this draws the readers in as something can be won. The title font I have used here, was from 'Dafont.com', I then coloured it in on paint, I will be using this exact one for my real magazine cover.
Contents; I really like the style of this contents, especially the masthead, and the title's down the side of the page, I think i will most likely use these as it suits the magazines needs by standing out and being bright, just like the masthead. The images at the bottom of the page are of 'dafont.com' and I think they fit in really well, I did try it with the colour scheme however the black and white work better together I think, I really like how it's quite simple however stands out and is just like an audio tape, cd player.
DoublePageSpread; The rip effect will definetly be used in my real magazine, I got the image of google however I will be taking the picture of a ripped peice of paper, this will most likely be a different colour to white as I can then change it to white on photoshop as it looks better and more professional. The reason I like it so much is because the title of the article is going to be called two lives, and with a rip down the page it splits the artist up into two, one being her perform and the other in 'real life'. I really like this double page however I think it's too plain, with my real one I want it to be stand out, my real images will do this and the title however i'm not sure on what font and colours I will be using there, and how I will use the colour scheme to not look messy. I wan't more going on with the page however not too crammed. I don't really like how I have done the overlapping images as I think it looks quite childish and collage like, I do like this effect however just not here. The big image is one of my real photo's for the magazine also the 'Never Again' one, the never again being her album, I have not chosen the final images for the magazine however I do have an idea.

Contents Pages.

The reason I chose this contents page is because it stood out to me, and that's what I wan't mine to do. I really like the layout out of the page, especially the masthead, I like the font and how the white reflects of the black. There are five different colour fonts which I personally think is too much however it doesn't look a mess, the most important writing being the white which I think is good how they have done that. I also like the image at the top of the page, especially how it fit's along the top and isn't in the way of anything. However  I do wan't my title 'contents' at the top of the page, before any images or information because I think people should know what they are going to be reading about first of all. There is a lot of colours on the contents page which normally would of liked quite messy but I think it works really well, the pastel colours and then the quite bright coloured images attract the reader. I really like the fonts, they're not too childish however not too plain for the older generation which could mean the audience is an all rounder.                                   This is definetly one of my favourite magazine contents pages that I have seen in the shops and online, I really like how the image is the whole page and there is very little writing. I also really like the colour scheme, black and white really works together. The masthead being down the side I don't really like as I would prefer seeing it at the top however I do like how it is in a larger font than the rest of the writing. From what I can see the magazine could be an audience of female and male and more of a younger genertion rather than the old. The writing is quite plain, nothing fancy and that really goes with the page as it's just quite a dull black and white, with no colours it's quite boring like the font however I don't think it need's colour as this has a better effect.

I really like the layout of this contents page, especially how it has the photos down the side of the 'also in this issue' which i was thinking of doing, however maybe at the bottom. I think the colours match very well and there is just enough colour, not too much however not too dull. I don't really like the page number at the bottom as I think it draws too much attention too which is uneeded, it does this by being quite big. I really like the fon also and how the masthead goes with all of the other writing too, and how the titles have a black background behind them, I am definetly thinking of using this in my magazine as I think it makes them really stand out.

NAME IDEAS.

The first name I came up with was 'Rewind' I thought it suited my magazine perfectly, the music and the scenes, my magazine consists of many different types of music including 'Old Skool' which where Rewind fit's in, however there was a problem- while researching images and ideas I came across a magazine with the title 'RWD' which also consists of the same music as me, so this really put me down as I don't wan't to come across I copied it. So I had to start over, I came up with ideas such as 'Fast Forward' 'Stop' 'Strike' 'Trash' 'Electro' 'Trashed'. The title 'Trash'/'Trashed' really stood out to me, I researched 'Trash Images' into google and found some really interesting photo's, some of which really inspired me.
